Effective February 7, 2022: If you're applying for a CDL for the first time or adding a Hazmat, Passenger, or School Bus endorsement for the first time, you must complete entry-level driver training (ELDT) prior to taking a CDL road test. Hazmat ELDT is required prior to taking the Hazardous Materials knowledge test. The training provider must be registered on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. The road test scheduling system offers the earliest available dates and times at sites near the ZIP code you provide. Usually, the earliest date is within 3 to 5 weeks, but at peak testing periods during summer and school breaks it may be up to 10 weeks away. There are no waiting lists. Tests are almost always on weekdays (only rarely do we offer them on a Saturday).
Tests can be canceled/rescheduled or relocated due to bad weather or road construction. Before you leave for your test, check the DMV cancellations, closings, and delays webpage or call 1-518-402-2100.
After the road test, the examiner will give you instructions on how to receive your test results by visiting roadtestresults.nyrtsscheduler.com. Your results will be posted to the website after 6 p.m. on the day of your test.
The road test allows the driver to demonstrate an understanding of safe driving by adhering to the rules of the road. The road test may be taken once the knowledge and vision tests are successfully completed at a driver testing center, and you have practiced supervised driving as outlined below: Practice supervised driving for at least 6 months (Graduated Driver License (GDL) requirement for under 21 years of age)
Practice supervised driving for at least 3 months (Graduated Driver License (GDL) requirement for over 21 years of age)
Non-GDL practice supervised driving for at least 20 days
An appointment is needed to take a road test. You may schedule your road test online at this link. You may also schedule an appointment at a driver testing center. A Safety Specialist (Examiner) will accompany you while driving in an off-road testing area or on a public road course. The test will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Backup cameras and parking sensors that have been installed on a motor vehicle are permitted to be used during a road test.
If you enter a roadway against traffic, DO NOT ENTER and WRONG WAY signs may be posted. When it is safe, back out or turn around. If you are driving at night, you will know you are going the wrong way if the road reflectors shine red in your headlights.
Right-of-way rules help you understand who goes first when vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists meet on the road. The vehicle that arrives to the intersection first has the right-of-way. Other vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians must wait for the person who has the right-of-way. Never assume that other drivers will give you the right-of-way. Give up your right-of-way when it will help prevent collisions.
An intersection is any place where one road meets another road. Controlled intersections have signs or traffic signal lights. Uncontrolled and blind intersections do not. Before entering an intersection, check for vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Be prepared to slow down and stop if necessary. Pedestrians always have the right-of-way. Here are some right-of-way rules at intersections:
A crosswalk is the part of the road set aside for pedestrians to safely cross the road. They are often marked with white lines. School crossings may have yellow crosswalk lines. Not all crosswalks are marked.
If two vehicles meet on a steep narrow road and neither vehicle can pass, the vehicle facing uphill has the right-of-way. The vehicle facing downhill has more control when backing up the hill. The vehicle facing downhill should back up until the vehicle going uphill can pass.
It's deceptive to misrepresent - directly or indirectly - that a product offers a general environmental benefit.
